Kibebe is located in the Artisan Shop in Old Town Mall and rated #1 shopping location in Lilongwe by TripAdvisor.
It is the social business arm of There is Hope, local NGO providing access to education and income generating activities to refugees from different countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi and Rwanda at Dzaleka Refugee Camp and their host community.
Dzaleka Refugee Camp is the biggest refugee camp in Malawi and hosts around 28,000 refugees and asylum seekers.
Innocent Magambi, a founder of There is Hope also used to live there as a refugee.
He was born to Burundian parents in a refugee settlement in DRC. When civil war broke out in DRC, he was forced to flee the country and lived in various refugee camps in Tanzania, Zambia and later Malawi.
Refugees are not legally allowed to work outside the camp, so Kibebe is working to bridge that gap.
All items are hand-made with very high attention to detail by around 40 artisans who are women and men, many from the refugee community, some living with disabilities.
They provide a wide range of products using vibrant African fabric ‘chitenje’ from baby books and kids T-shirts with cute appliques to lovely covered notebooks, natural soaps, and recycled paper note cards.
They can be also found at the monthly Farmers Market in Lilongwe.
Profit from Kibebe are utilized to support the work of There is Hope.
