Shepherd Huxley Bushiri, known as Major 1 was born to a poor African Christian family and grew up in Mzuzu, Malawi.
Though there is no factual information about his parentage and birth, there are speculations that he is the fourth child a family of six children born by Huxley and Cristina Bushiri who hails from Zambia on 20 February 1983.
His mother gave him the name Shepherd due to the complexities around his birth, acknowledging the Lord as her Shepherd.
His journey as a prophet of God began at a young age; God appeared to him in a dream and told that he has been called to be his prophet.
Thereafter, Bushiri recounts that God kept appearing to him with messages for people.
Bushiri attended Moyale Secondary School located in Mzuzu and completed a Ph.D. in philosophy from Therapon University, an institute of Online Learning.
He is married to Mary Zgambo in 2011 and blessed with two children.
Mary is not just a wife, but she is a businesswoman and the C.E.O of Shepherd Bushiri Investments.
In 2010, he founded the Christian non-denominational evangelical church known as the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church (ECG) in Mzuzu.
His congregation drastically increased in the years after the Church headquarters relocated to Pretoria, South Africa from Mzuzu.
It has branches around the world and is reported as one of the fastest growing churches in Africa and the world.
Bushiri’s services attract millions of people via his channel of a satellite TV known as ‘Prophetic Channel’ every Sunday.
His largest gatherings are held on New Year’s Eve at South Africa’s FNB Stadium which is the largest stadium in Africa with over 95,000 attendees.
Bushiri started his first business at an early age after receiving a small loan from his father.
The loan was used in farming with profits reinvested into larger ventures.
He is currently running a global investment company, Shepherd Bushiri Investments (Pty) Ltd, which is an international investment company based in Sandton near Johannesburg, with interests in oil, gold mining, real estate, hotel, an airline, and other entrepreneurial pursuits.
He also owns an electronics company, a telecommunication company, various farms and a private University in South Sudan named the Bushiri University of Agriculture.
He is now known as one of the richest pastors in the world and ranked as the richest people in Malawi.
His net worth is said to be USD150 million.
He owns several private jets, fleets of cars, houses in Malawi, South Africa and in some other Africa countries.
Bushiri became popular in 2015 when a video of him “walking on air” went viral.
He has been accused of making unproven claims of “curing HIV”.
On 1 February 2019, Bushiri was arrested together with his wife in South Africa for fraud and money laundering, as well as the contravention of South Africa’s Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA), which had been committed from 2015.
Bushiri and his wife were each granted R100,000 (about USD7,000) bail after appearing in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria on 6 February 2019.
