Travelling with Children in Malawi

Malawi is known as ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’ and generally a safe and friendly place for children to visit. Malawi’s rich culture and hospitality can be found across the country and kids can enjoy dancing with locals, learning to cook Nsima and stopping off to sample some fried ants. Older kids will love the beautiful nature such as national parks and sandy beaches.

However, like many lakes and rivers in Malawi, bilharzia is present. One choice would be to avoid the water altogether, but those who are difficult to do that, medication is available at a pharmacy in cities.

And Malaria is also the common challenge especially for under 5 kids, though anti-malarial drugs can easily be bought in any pharmacy and using insect repellent and sleeping under a mosquito net is the best form of protection.

The most convenient way to move around Malawi with kids is to rent a 4×4 vehicle, as the poor condition of some of the roads can make it tough going especially in the wet season.

Many of the big city restaurants frequented by expats and tourists will be able to provide high chairs.

Disposable nappies and formula are widely available in supermarkets and speciality shops in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu, but they can be difficult to find elsewhere.
